Revolutionizing Inspection: The Role of Robotics in Modern Industries

Revolutionizing Inspection

The Role of Robotics in Modern Industries

At the AWS Inspection and Expo in Austin, Texas, I heard Dylan Duke from “MFE Inspection Solutions” speak on the role of Robotics in Modern Inspections. It was an incredible opportunity to hear about all of the new inspection equipment.

This blog is a very general summary of the presentation.

Inspection is a critical part of any manufacturing or industrial process. It ensures the safety, quality, and reliability of the finished product. However, traditional inspection methods have limitations, such as the risk of human error, accessibility, and safety issues. The solution lies in robotics, which has revolutionized the inspection process.

Evolution

The evolution of inspection technology has been rapid. In the past, human inspectors were involved in wire rope and confined space entry inspections, which were repetitive and tedious, making them prone to error. However, the limitations of human-led inspections, such as accessibility, danger, and accuracy, necessitated the adoption of technology in inspection. This led to the development of remote visual inspection (RVI) crawlers, ultrasonic testing (UT) crawlers, and underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).

Integration

Integrating robotics into inspection processes poses various challenges and considerations. One challenge is training the workforce to operate and maintain robotic systems. Besides, there are technical challenges in adopting robotics and security. Other considerations include the initial cost of deploying robotic systems and the return on investment. Addressing skepticism and ensuring reliability is also crucial. Regulatory and safety standards for robotic inspections must be met for successful adoption.

Developments

One of the latest developments in robotic inspection is the combination of drones and spot robots. For instance, the Voliro T – UT drone, Skydio X2 Autonomous with doc, and Flyability – Elios 3 are some of the most advanced drones used for inspection. These robots are equipped with sensors and cameras for data collection and analysis.

The Future

The future of robotic inspection is promising. Customizable and adaptive robots will be developed for diverse industries, addressing specific inspection needs. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the Internet of Things will enhance the robots’ capabilities. The environmental impact and sustainability of robotic inspection will also be considered, ensuring the process is eco-friendly. Collaboration between humans and robots in future inspection roles will be crucial. Predictive maintenance and its relationship with robotic inspection will enhance the efficiency of inspection processes.

Robotic Inspections have revolutionized inspection processes, addressing the limitations of traditional inspection methods. Adopting robotics in inspection poses various challenges and considerations, such as workforce training, technical challenges, and security. The future of robotic inspection is promising, with the development of customizable and adaptive robots for diverse industries, collaboration between humans and robots, and emerging technologies to enhance the robots’ capabilities.
