Man Lift Inspection
Aerial lift, Snorkel lift, aerial platform, man-lift, cherry picker—these terms all refer to the same thing: self-propelled elevating work platforms! These devices are essential for accessing locations above the ground and ensuring safety while working.
Inspection Requirements
Workplace Safety and Health requires that aerial work platforms undergo NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) after 10 years and then every 5 years thereafter. This structural NDT testing checks for deficiencies in the structural components, ensuring that the equipment holding your most valuable resource—your people—is safe and fit for use.
The 10-year and 5-year NDT requirements outlined in Workplace Safety and Health represent the minimum standards. The standard also references a code that recommends additional inspection requirements, including a less thorough structural inspection on an annual basis.
Annual Inspections
During the inspection, the NDT does not include ultrasonic testing of the pins; however, the other checks remain the same. Important assessments for deficiencies, cracks, and deformation or bends in the structure are completed.
Many companies are moving toward annual inspections of the equipment that lifts their personnel many meters off the ground. This proactive approach is an important step in ensuring employee safety. Organizations are recognizing the value of life, and the modest cost of annual inspections provides confidence in the safety of their equipment.
